Our spinal cord is made up of many bones and discs, one on top of the other. A healthy backbone has a curve when viewed sideways. Our spine looks straight when viewed from the back that determines a healthy bone structure.
On the other hand, Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of our spinal cord. It is not considered as a disease but an abnormality. It is where the backbone curves to the side and forms either an S or a C shaped. There are several types of scoliosis that a person could have and this condition often has no known cause.
What are the types of Scoliosis?
Scoliosis has many types. Each type has its own set of diagnostic label. Doctors considered scoliosis as a variable condition because it is tricky to have an exact diagnosis of it. The following are the types of Scoliosis
- Congenital scoliosis
It is a type of scoliosis that is present at birth. The word congenital means the condition is already existing since the child is born. Some of the bones on the spine grow unevenly as a child was born because the vertebrae in the spine did not fully form.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
It is a type of scoliosis that develops when during child’s growth. This abnormality may pull the ribcage of the patient from its position because the spine is curving and twisting at the same time. This kind of scoliosis has no known origin according to the study of researchers.

Degenerative scoliosis
This type of scoliosis occurs to an adult who has had an account of scoliosis in the past. The spine starts to degrade due to age. This degradation can cause the vertebrae to break down that makes the curve more severe. This type of scoliosis can be very painful compared to the other classification.
-
Neuromuscular scoliosis
This type of scoliosis happens when there is a Neurological or muscular condition. The reason why this disorder occurs is that of sickness or injury. This type of abnormality can distress the muscle-nerve routes in the patient’s body from the brain down to the spinal cord. Some of the primary factors known to contribute to this condition include myelodysplasia and cerebral palsy.

Syndromic Scoliosis
It is a type of scoliosis that develops from some syndrome. A syndrome is a condition that is made up of many symptoms that come out together. Some of the syndromes are Rett’s syndrome, muscular dystrophy, Beale’s syndrome, and a variety of connective tissue disorders. As part of the syndrome, the spine curves sideways. The symptoms of this are not usually painful but can cause discomfort when it gets severe.

Scheuermann’s kyphosis
Kyphosis is a forward rounding of the spinal cord. Scheuermann’s kyphosis is a type of scoliosis that commonly occurs during childhood where the front parts of the small bones that make up the spine grow more slowly than the back sections. However, this type of scoliosis is quite rare to occur in people compared to the other classifications.
